Scope and Content

This collection contains: minutes of negotiating meetings between management and trade union representatives at the Corby works, 1939-1967; agreements and wage alterations mainly at the Corby works, 1934-1974; files of the director of industrial relations, 1970-1977; files concerning closure of works, 1974-1980; agreements and related records, 1896-1981; committee records concerning supplies and transport, 1969-1974.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Iron and Steel Act of 1967 brought the 14 largest steel companies, representing about 90 per cent of the UK's steelmaking capacity, into public ownership as the British Steel Corporation. In 1988, after a period of profound rationalisation, the British Steel Corporation was privatised to become British Steel plc.

The largest part of the deposits made in the Centre by British Steel plc is formed by the records of the British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) and its predecessor, the National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers. The deposits also include records of a number of regional and sectional iron and steel employers' organisations associated with the BISF, its successor the British Independent Steel Producers' Association and the statutory Iron and Steel Board .
