Administrative / Biographical History

In 1865 Alfred Fernandez Yarrow and Mr Hedley established an engineering business at Folly Wall, Isle of Dogs, Poplar, London, England . The business soon expanded into the production of steam launches, but in 1875  the partnership of Yarrow & Hedley was dissolved and the firm became Yarrow & Co . In 1897  the business was incorporated as Yarrow & Co Ltd , and between 1906 and 1908  the company moved from Poplar to Scotstoun, Glasgow, Scotland . Following a slump in orders following the 1914-1918 World War, the company entered liquidation in 1921  , but was reconstructed under the same name in the following year.

In 1946,  the Yarrow Admiralty Research Department (Y-ARD) was established. In 1965  the firm's premises in Scotstoun were enlarged to include the neighbouring facilities of the Blythswood Shipbuilding Co Ltd and, in 1975,  the dry docks of Barclay Curle & Co Ltd , Glasgow, were also absorbed. In Yarrow (Shipbuilders) Ltd 1966,  was formed as a subsidiary of Yarrow & Co Ltd , which thereafter acted as a holding company. The new company became a member of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968  , but left it again in 1971  . It was nationalised and became part of British Shipbuilders in 1977  and was sold to GEC in 1985  . In 2002, the Yarrow shipyard was still operating as part of BAE Systems Marine (YSL) Ltd.
