Administrative / Biographical History

The Science Technology and Society Association (STSA) was established in 1979 and its first president was Tony Benn, then Minister of Energy. It had its beginnings in the 1977 summer school organised by SISCON, the Science in a Social Context Project. Whereas SISCON had limited aims and duration, the STSA aimed to have a wider scope and to last longer; it was to be informative and educational, by publishing a newsletter and by organising an annual summer school. It hoped to attract members drawn from across society, including industrialists, managers and trade unionists (STSA Newsletter no.0, Jan 1979). It ceased to function in 1988.
