Queen Lozikeyi was one of the widows of Lobengula, King of the Ndebele.
Lobengula (c1833-1894) succeeded his father in 1870 as King of the Ndebele.From his kraal at Bulawayo, he tried to prevent encroachments by Europeancolonists, etc.. However, in 1888, he granted mineral rights in Ndebeleland toCecil Rhodes. These concessions formed the basis for thefoundation of the British South Africa Company in 1889. In 1893, due to Companypressure on Ndebele territory, Lobengula declared war on the British. Theswift British victory was aided greatly by the Company's use of the Maxim machine gun.Lobengula died whilst fleeing north.
