Annie Powell became the Communist Mayor of Rhondda in 1979. She was the first mayor in England and Wales to be elected on a Communist ticket. Prior to 1979 she had been Deputy-Mayor and had served 18 years as a Communist councillor. Annie Powell had also been a teacher for 40 years.
