Papers of Francis Harrison (fl 1895-1988), student of Physics at University College Nottingham and school teacher, 1919-1946

The collection primarily consists of material relating to the time spent by Francis Arthur Harrison (fl 1895-1988) studying physics at University College Nottingham (1919-1922), including Harrison's university notebooks, examination publications, papers and photographs relating to his sporting and musical activities, and official material from The University of London. Papers and photographs from Harrison's schooldays at Alderman Newton's School, Leicester, St Paul's School, Cheltenham, his teaching accreditation, and his career at Bablake School, Coventry, are also present. In addition, the collection contains: programmes for concerts and musical services collected by Harrison throughout his life; material relating to Francis Harrison's brother, William Charles Harrison (b. 27 Oct. 1890); and 'A Leicestershire Boy Goes to War', the diaries of Francis Arthur Harrison compiled by his son, Paul Harrison.

Francis Arthur Harrison was born in 1895 and was educated at Alderman Newton's School, Leicester, St. Paul's School, Cheltenham and Battersea Polytechnic, London. He served in Malta and France during the First World War and rose to the rank of sergeant before returning home with a hand injury. He was awarded a scholarship which enabled him to attend University College Nottingham (now The University of Nottingham) from 1919 to 1922. He sat the intermediate science course before progressing to a Physics degree. While at Nottingham he was a keen soccer player and violinist. After college, he was appointed as a Physics master at Bablake School, Coventry where he taught for 38 years until his retirement in 1960.

The collection has been divided by document type into series. Within these series, items have been arranged chronologically.
