Administrative / Biographical History

The London Cab Drivers' Trade Union was formed in 1894. It changed its name to the London and Provincial Union of Licensed Vehicle Workers in 1913 and admitted bus and tram workers as well as cab drivers. In 1919 it merged with the Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers to form the United Vehicle Workers.

The Union was known as the 'red union' as opposed to the 'blue union', the Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers, based on the colours of the respective members' badges. The London and Provincial Union was considerably the more militant of the two.
