The dissertation is essentially the same as Kanya-Forstner's Cambridge Ph.D. thesis, 'The role of the military in the formation of French policy towards the Western Sudan, 1879-1899' (Ph.D. 5149, 1965), which was published in a revised and enlarged form as The conquest of the Western Sudan: a study of French military imperialism (Cambridge, 1969).
