Records of the Grammar School, Old Aberdeen

Scope and Content

Register of pupils attending the Grammar School, Old Aberdeen, Autumn quarter 1870 - October 1885. The register, which was compiled by Dr William Dey, rector, contains a list of pupils, with date of admission, indicating which were bursary-holders, with the value of bursary held. No additional biographical or family details are recorded therein.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Dey, born in Kirkmichael, Bannffshire, on 5th January 1836, graduated from the University of Aberdeen MA 1861 and LLD 1885. He was Rector of the Grammar School Old Aberdeen (familiarly known as The Barn), 1870 - 1887, and one of the Assessors in the University Court, elected by the General Council, from 1889 until his death in Aberdeen, on 15th November 1915. He represented the University on several educational committees, including the Commission for Education in the Highlands and Islands, and the Board of Governor's of the Agricultural College; served as Inspector of Schools under the Dick Bequest; was a member of the Aberdeen School Board, 1891 - 1894; and prominent member and sometime Chairman of the Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers.

He lectured locally on education and training, and was author of several books and pamphlets on the subject, including Glimpses of education, recent and remote (Aberdeen Provincial Committee, 1909); Some educational changes and what they imply (n.p.: Dey, 1909); and Scheme for training of teachers under the Local Committee (Aberdeen: Aberdeen University Press, ?1904).

He left several generous bequests to the University on his death, and with members of his family co-founded the James Dey Scholarship in Education, in memory of his father, James Dey of Abernethy, Strathspey.

See also, the records of Chanonry School, Old Aberdeen, 1879 - 1892 (GB 231 MS 2633). The Chanonry School was closed in 1887, and the funds for the Anderson Scholarships, which it had administered, transferred to the Grammar School, Aberdeen at this time.
