The Loyal Wheelwrights and Blacksmiths' Society was formed in Bolton in 1830. It was renamed the Loyal Free Industrious Society of Wheelwrights and Blacksmiths in 1870, and later became the Wheelwrights and Smiths' Society. In 1908, it amalgamated with the Amalgamated Wheelwrights' and Carriage Makers' Union to form the Amalgamated Society of Wheelwrights, Smiths and Motor Body Makers, later the Amalgamated Wheelwrights, Smiths and Kindred Trades Union.

Custodial History
In the 1970s, the Transport and General Workers' Union deposited older records of the National Union of Vehicle Builders and its predecessors, including those of the Amalgamated Wheelwrights, Smiths and Kindred Trades Union, in the Vehicle Building and Automotive Museum that it had established in Coventry. The museum opened in 1976 and closed in 1980, when the records were transferred to the union's regional office. They were transferred to the Modern Records Centre in June 1987.
