Letters from Mathews to his parents describing his life and work as Political Officer and Anthropological Officer in Nigeria (1910-1929). Also, official correspondence, reports, anthropological notes etc. by Mathews and others (1912-1961).

Administrative / Biographical History

Hubert Frank Mathews was educated at the City of Oxford High School and Jesus College, Oxford. In 1909 he graduated in Physics and then turned to Anthropology. This led to a career in Nigeria, where he served for the next 20 years, first as a Political Officer in the north and later, after returning to Oxford in 1925 to take a Diploma in Anthropology, as an Anthropological Officer in the south.
