Administrative / Biographical History
The tithe was an annual payment made by parishioners to the parish church. Originally, it was one-tenth of the yearly produce of the land, and it would be paid in kind, but later, following the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836, it was paid in money.
The document known as a Tithe Apportionment listed the tithe rent-charge for the parish or district, apportioned fairly among the lands of differing quality and various uses.
