Scope and Content

Records of Pritchard, Gordon & Company relating to the operation of the private firm and its amalgamation with Lloyds, including:

  • Operation (1806-1846): customers’ ledgers, customers’ incidental papers and banker’s licence to issue promissory notes and correspondence relating to design of printing plates for cheques and banknotes;
  • Amalgamation (1888-1897): financial statements, correspondence and amalgamation agreement;
  • General (1857-1861): estate papers.

Administrative / Biographical History

Foundation

This private bank was formed in 1799 as Vickers, Son & Pritchard and later went through a number of partnership changes until it became Pritchard, Gordon & Co. in 1884. It was otherwise known as the Broseley & Bridgnorth Bank. In 1799 it established a branch at Bridgnorth.

Takeover

In 1888 the bank was acquired by Lloyds, Barnetts & Bosanquets Bank (which became Lloyds Bank the following year).
