Miscellaneous notes, illustrations and extracts from printed papers compiled by William Carruthers on geological subjects bound into two volumes.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Carruthers FRS (1830-1922), Scottish naturalist, was born in Moffat and educated at Edinbugh University and New College, Edinburgh. He was the Keeper of the Botanical Dept. at the British Museum, President of the Linnaean Society 1886-1890 and President of the Geologist's Association 1875-1877. He also had an interest in the history and literature of Puritanism and as well as his many scientific papers on botany and natural history he also was also the editor of the Children's Messenger for the Presbyterian Church of England.
