Sir John Serocold Paget Mellor was born in London in 1893 and educated at Eton and New College, Oxford. In the Somerset Light Infantry he served in India and Burma, and was attached to the 5th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, in Mesopotamia from August 1915. He was held POW (Prisoner of War) after the Siege of Kut.
