Research documents supporting doctoral thesis of Dr Janet Miller (née Winters) and subsequent research and publications. The thesis focused on the UK horseracing industry, in particular the labour process in racing stables. The collection contains a mixture of industry and union papers and includes: documents re a review of working practices in the industry conducted for the British Horseracing Board in 2000; Dr Miller's field notes and material on the creation and subsequent running of the Stable Lads' Association which succeeded the TGWU as the representative body for stable lads/girls after the 1975 Newmarket lads' strike; industry reports; material re trade unions and the small firm and the impact of the national minimum wage on racing.
