Comprises: (1) 6 reels of tape of Peckett and others teaching the Oral Method at Shrewsbury, marked 'University of Leicester, School of Education, oral Latin'; (2) Typescript introduction and content notes to accompany the tapes, with manuscript alterations; (3) 1 reel of tape, marked 'BBC Latin'; (4) 6 audio cassettes of Peckett and others teaching the Oral Method, marked 'Leicester Tapes'; (5) Manuscript content notes to accompany the cassettes; (6) 13 copies of pamphlet 'Oral Latin texts' and 3 copies of pamphlet 'Oral Latin notes', both produced by University of Leicester, School of Education; (7) Joint Association of Classical Teachers Review, Summer 1992, containing "The oral method" by Peckett; (8) Classics Association News, Dec 1992, including letter and song by Peckett, together with a manuscript version of the same.

Administrative / Biographical History

C.W.E. Peckett had been taught Latin by the Direct Method at the Perse School, Cambridge, and he used this method to teach Latin at Beckenham and Penge County School, 1935-1946. As Headmaster of the Priory School, Shrewsbury, 1946-1967, he developed and codified the Oral Method. He published Principia: a beginners' Latin course (1949).
