Sir Thomas Pope Kt of Tittenhaunger, Hertfordshire, leases to John Basford, gent (son of Sir Thomas's wife Dame Elizabeth), the manor of Hilton, the advowson of the church of Eggynton, and all his other lands in Derbyshire, for 60 years after Sir Thomas's death or for Basford's life, whichever is the shorter, at the annual rent of one red rose, payable upon Midsummer Day. Indenture, signed and sealed by Basford. Pendant tagged red round seal with armorial 'dragon' device, tag cut from contemporary deed. Endorsed with illegible contemporary note, possibly concerning administration of the estate during Basford's minority, signed by Thomas Pope, and with an eighteenth-century endorsement of identification.
