Administrative / Biographical History
Petty Sessions were introduced in the 18th century as extra courts to lessen the load on the Quarter Sessions. The Sessions were subdivided geographically within the county and were held before two or more magistrates but no jury. As well as dealing with minor criminal cases Petty Sessions had responsibility for the licensing of public houses and as a result plans of licensed houses were deposited with the clerk of the court.

These plans were discovered during a house clearance. The original provenance is thought to be Bishop's solicitors of Brynmawr who acted as clerk to the justices of Brynmawr Petty Sessional Division.
