Scope and Content

Passports, receipts, business correspondence concerning offers and termination of employment, and personal photographs, postcards (many are in Hungarian), Certificate of Naturalization (Mar 1948), last will and testament (Oct 1981), three photograph albums, c1910s-c1969.

Administrative / Biographical History

Lenke Spitzer, also known as Lenke Sarlos, was born in Kalocsa, Hungary, on 26 Dec 1908. She arrived in England in the late 1930s, assisted by the Cockeram family, and in Mar 1948 she became a naturalized British citizen, At the time she was working as a dressmaker and was living in New Brighton, Wallasey, Cheshire. During the late 1950s she was working at the Hungarian Refugees Reception Centre at Hednesford, Staffs, and later as a Temporary Clerical Officer at the Zetland Hungarian Hostel, Marske-By-The-Sea, Redcar, North Yorks. By 1977 she had settled in Liverpool. She never married, but had a nephew, George Kende, who lived in Munich in the early 1980s.
