This collection relates to the Trevor family of Anglesey and Caernarfon.
Arthur Pelham Trevor, retired Brigadier, of Glan-y-Don, Beaumaris, Anglesey, was well known locally for research on various local subjects and involvement in charity and voluntary work. He was married and had five children.
A.P. Trevor was born in Kent, educated at Harrow school and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1929. After a long and distinguished military career, during which he was awarded a DSO and in 1960 made ADC to the Queen, he retired in 1962. Following retirement he became involved with charity work in England and also spent four years in the mid 1960's as an instructor at the Civil Defence Staff College in Sunningdale.
In 1971, after the death of his wife Bren, he returned to live in North Wales, where he had longstanding family connections and had spent a large part of his childhood. He became an enthusiastic and energetic researcher on various subjects, most notably icehouses, the wind and water mills of Anglesey and Penrhyn Castle, Bangor. Charitable and voluntary organisations with which he was actively associated include the National Association of Leagues of Hospital Friends, for whom he was General Secretary from 1966-1970, the North Wales Naturalists' Trust and the National Art Collections Fund.
Other notable Trevor family members to which this collection relates includes Roger Trevor a member of the British South Africa Company Police in the late nineteenth century. Also, Reverend John William Trevor (1793-1864), who held various church positions including vicar of Llanbeblig, Caernarfonshire, treasurer of Bangor cathedral, rector of Llanbeulan, Anglesey and chancellor in the diocese of Bangor. He was married to Frances Althea Wollaston daughter of Reverend John Hyde Wollaston, rector of South Weald, Essex and prebendary of St. Paul's. She died in 1830 and her husband subsequently married Elizabeth Warren, daughter of the Very Reverend John Warren, dean of Bangor.
John William Trevor was the son of Reverend Thomas Trevor, LLD, (1772-1827) who was born Thomas Humphreys. He had been adopted by his great uncle, Reverend Thomas Trevor and on succeeding to his estates discarded Humphreys and assumed Trevor as his surname, later becoming prebendary of Chester, rector of West Kirby and vicar of Eastham.
