The 1984-1985 Miners' Strike newspaper collection

The newspapers in this collection provide an insight into the key events and chronology of the 1984-5 Miners' Strike. Besides newspapers the collection includes a small amount of cartoons, postcards, posters, pamphlets and photocopies of material on miners' wives.

Local branches of the NUM and other organisations, which supported the striking miners, produced the newspapers in this collection.

The newspapers have been grouped by title and then arranged chronologically.

• NUM Minutes of meetings of the National Executive Committee, 1984-1985

In 1990 The Labour Party Archive and Library moved from Walworth Road, London to join the People's History Museum (formerly National Museum of Labour History) in Manchester. The Miners' Strike newspapers are now held at the Labour History Archive and Study Centre, which is based at the People's History Museum.

Photocopies and photographic copies of material in the archive can be supplied for private study purposes only, depending on the condition of the documents. Prior written permission must be obtained from the Archive for publication or reproduction of any material within the Archive.

No further appraisal, destruction or scheduling is expected to take place.

The LHASC holds the Martin Walker Papers which include press cuttings, supporters bulletins and newspapers charting the progress of the Miners' StrikeThe LHASC also holds the papers of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, 1984-1985 and there are also references to the strike in the Michael Foot Papers, the Hilary Wainwright Papers and the Eric Heffer Papers. The Communist Party of Great Britain Archive also contains material on the 1984-1985 Miners' Strike including Party statements and support group correspondence and bulletins. The People's History Museum holds banners, posters and ephemera relating to the strike.

Material relevant to the 1984 Miners' Strike can also be found at the South Wales Coalfield collection at the University of Wales Swansea, Archives, Library and Information Services There will also be relevant material in local and county record offices in areas affected by the dispute.
