O.V. Jones Papers

The collection consists of deeds, documents and plans relating to Garreg Lwyd, Menai Bridge, Anglesey, the home of O.V. Jones, 1912 - 1984. Also files of biographical material, off-prints, and newspapers cuttings relating to the career of O.V. Jones - one item compiled by Dr G. Wyn Griffith. Included, is the typescript of his history of the C & A Infirmary and a file on the Student Union of the University College of North Wales with details of the use of the Welsh language and student numbers. Also, the CV of Dr John Glyn Penrhyn Jones of Tyddyn Elen, Bontnewydd, compiled by O.V. Jones, 1976.

Owen Vaughan Jones, obstetrician and gynaecologist, was born on 27 December 1907 at Llanwnda, Caernarfonshire and educated at Caernarfon County School and Liverpool University where he studied medicine. He moved to work at the C & A Infirmary in 1937 and was the first consultant obstetrician to be appointed by Caernarfonshire County Council. The maternity service initially based in a small ward at the C & A, expanded to become a well equipped modern hospital known as St. David's for obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics.

O.V. Jones was vice-president of the Northern Society of Obstetricians, and as well as having numerous papers published, he also undertook a heavy programme of lectures and papers to conferences throughout Britain and the United States. In 1963 he became a member of the University Court of the University of Wales Bangor and served as chairman of the council. He was also a founder of the Welsh Medical Society, Y Gymdeithas Feddygol, and an honorary member of the gorsedd of the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

In 1984, he published The Progress of Medicine : A History of the Caernarvon and Anglesey Infirmary.

He was married to Gwyneth Jane Davies and had two children, a son, Huw Vaughan and a daughter, Luned Vaughan. He lived at Garreg Lwyd, Menai Bridge, Anglesey and died in 1986.

The papers were received at different occasions and have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts. They are arranged chronologically.
