1974 General Election
There were two elections in 1974. The first was held on 28th February. TheConservation party had 11,872,180 votes (37.9) and 297 MPs, while theLabour party had 11, 645,616 votes (37.2) and 301 MPs, which created aminority government for the Labour party. The second election was held inOctober. The Labour party had 11,457,079 votes (39.2) while theConservative party had 10,462,565 votes (35.8). It was Labour leaderHarold Wilson's (1916 - 1995) fourth success in a general election. Theleader of the Conservative party, Edward Heath (b. 1916) was challenged andreplaced as party leader by Margaret Thatcher (b. 1925) in 1975.
