Administrative / Biographical History

John Jamieson Willis (1872-1954) was born on 8 November 1872, and educated at Haileybury College and at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. He was curate of Great Yarmouth, 1895-1900, and worked as a missionary of the Church Missionary Society at Ankole, 1900-1902; Entebbe, 1902-1905; and Kavirondo, 1905-1911. Willis was Archdeacon of Kavirondo and chaplain to the Bishop of Uganda, 1909-1911; Bishop of Uganda, 1912-1934; and Assistant Bishop to the Bishop of Leicester, 1935-1949. He retired in 1949, and died on 12 November 1954.
