Zuckerman Archive: Stockholm International Peace Research Institute

File SZ/SIPRI/1 includes a substantial folder of correspondence formerly among Solly Zuckerman's personal files at the Cabinet Office entitled International Institute for Peace and Conflict Research, 1966-1971 [old file reference N/10]. This includes a letter to Lord Mountbatten, 2 January 1975, referring to Zuckerman's reservations about the nomination of Academician Reutov to the Council by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Reutov was nominated to replace the late Prof. Millionschikov. Zuckerman had found Reutov an immensely difficult member of the United Nations Panel on Chemical and Biological Warfare.

There are a number of SIPRI publications, including proof copies of some, in that part of Lord Zuckerman's personal library bequeathed to UEA and now joined with his Archive.

The Swedish government established an International Institute for Peace and Conflict Research in 1966, with a Scientific Council of 24 members. Solly Zuckerman was invited to be a founder member of the Scientific Council and urged to accept by Alva Myrdal and Lord Chalfont, then the British Minister for Disarmament. Chalfont considered that Zuckerman's presence on the Council would do much to fashion a cutting edge [and] firm basis of realpolitik in the deliberations of the Council [letter, Lord Chalfont to Solly Zuckerman, 7 December 1966]. Alva Myrdal's husband, Professor Gunnar Myrdal, chaired SIPRI's governing Board from its foundation until 1973.

In 1987 Zuckerman joined Manfred Lachs and others in pressing for a meeting of the Scientific Council, which had not convened for some time. There is evidence that Zuckerman and others who attended the meeting that was eventually held in September of the following year were unhappy about what is happening at SIPRI [draft letter written by Robert Neild, 12 October 1988, in File SZ/SIPRI/1].
