Administrative / Biographical History
Ernest Joly, the owner of a bank, Henry Heald&Co, in Beirut and head of the Joly family, was held hostage by the Turks in Damascus with his son Kenneth from 10 December 1914. He was later interned with his family in a monastery at Urfa, from which the women and children were evacuated in 1915, and then at Nev Shehir, Anatolia, until 1918.
