Chris Hayes was born in 1916 and became a junior reporter at Melody Maker, then a jazz and dance music paper, in 1934. He stayed with the weekly paper until his retirement in 1981. He also wrote for local newspapers and the magazine Memory Lane, as well as authoring a number of books on dance music. He died in 2002.
