Administrative / Biographical History

The donor's grandfather farmed at Grove Farm, Wedmore, Somerset; his father moved from there to Stanford Dingley, Berkshire in 1928. The donor himself at first farmed with his father. He subsequently moved to Tytherton, . Wilts but returned to Stanford Dingley in about 1933. After selling the farm in 1948 he tried unsuccessfully to purchase Frogmore Farm, Bradfield Berkshire. He then moved to Cranleigh, Surrey and did not finally acquire Frogmore Farm until 1960. Although the donor is an only son, three of his four cousins are farmers. Throughout its farming history, the family has been committed to livestock farming and in 1960 the donor abandoned milk production to concentrate on beef cattle and (later) barley. He estimates that the farm runs at a loss, although the loss is offset to some extent by capital accumulated from the sale of farms held earlier.
