Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The United Vehicle Workers was formed in 1919 by the amalgamation of the London and Provincial Union of Licensed Vehicle Workers and the Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers. It represented tram and bus drivers and conductors, cab drivers, chauffeurs, horsekeepers, cabmen, carters, lurrymen, farriers, and vehicle washers and cleaners, and its brief existence was plagued by constant internal struggles between the different trade groups. On 1 January 1922 it became a founder member of the Transport and General Workers' Union.
