Engineering artefacts and models, including large working examples of engineering in miniature/scaled on display at the Institution's London headquarters. However, the majority of the collection is not readily available to view (see Conditions Governing Access).Of particular note are: steam traction engines by renowned model maker Cherry Hill; working workshop model based upon Royal Arsenal; First World War model Mercedes with movable parts; moving model Nasmyth steam hammer; Charles Parsons turbine (on loan to Manufacturing Technology Centre); Joseph Whitworth measuring machine and other artefacts; Frederick Lanchester's pendulum accelerometer used by Daimler, for brake and acceleration testing of vehicles; and wind tunnel test model of the Golden Arrow, world speed record car. Also, a number of artefacts belonging to George Stephenson, including tokens which allowed him perpetual free travel on various railways.
