Rev. Daniel Rowlands Papers

Scope and Content

The accounts of Y Traethodydd in the hand of Daniel Rowlands, 1865-1897, together with memoranda of agreement and sums paid for articles.

Newspaper cuttings arranged by Daniel Rowlands, covering the years 1885-1887, which witnessed the great split in the Liberal Party over Irish Home Rule. Also, items of local interest such as the proceeding of the Bangor Menai Society and the official opening of the University College of North Wales in 1884.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev. Daniel Rowlands, 1827-1917, was born in Llangefni, Anglesey and educated at the Bala C.M. College and the University of Edinburgh.

In 1865 he became the editor of Y Traethodydd and on the death of Rev. John Phillips in 1867, he was appointed to succeed him as Principal of the Bangor Normal College. He retired from his post in 1891.

He had two sons (John and Llewelyn) and three daughters (Anna, Menai and Olwen).
