A manor was a territorial unit with legal functions that was originally heldby a landlord who was himself a tenant either of the Crown or of a mesnelord who held land directly from the Crown. Court Leet was the manorial courtwhich dealt with petty law and order and the administration of communalagriculture. It was usually held every six months. Court baron was themanorial court which dealt with the transfer of copyhold land, uponinheritance or sale, which determined the customs of the manor, and whichenforced payment of services which were due to the lord of the manor. It wasusually held every three weeks.
