Administrative / Biographical History

This collection was bought at an auction by Dr William Lind. It is not known who had previously put it together, or to whom the negatives previously belonged. The negatives have been fully listed on an Access database called Photomarine_Ship_Negatives.mdb which is available to readers in the public searchroom at Glasgow University Archive Services.

William Lind gained his early industrial experience in his father's quarrying business. He served his apprenticeship as a shipwright at the Lamont shipyard in Greenock, before entering National Service in the Royal Army Service Corps (now the Royal Corps of Transport), where he was awarded a commission and also served as Adjutant to his regiment. On completion of his National Service he enlisted in the Territorial Army, serving until his retirement in 1972, and achieving the rank of Lt Colonel. It was in the 1970s that he first became involved with the Business Archives Council of Scotland, a forum linking academic and business interest in promoting the survival, collection, and study of business records. He was appointed Honorary Secretary of the BAC(S) in 1975 and, in this capacity he was active in rescuing records from a number of Scottish businesses, and also in raising funds towards the appointment of the BAC(S) Surveying Officer. He also personally surveyed technical records and plans on behalf of the BAC(S), the University of Glasgow, and the National Archives of Scotland. His passion for industrial history has contributed to the survival of the business records of a number of Scottish businesses.
