Register of Bangor House Occupiers

Comprises a one-volume register of house occupiers in the parish of Bangor in 1884. The register includes: house number, street name, name and occupation of house occupant, with some observations noted by the author regarding, for example, occupants previous address or state of health; if the house was used for a purpose other than dwelling, as a shop for example, that might be recorded.

The parish of Bangor was a civil as well as an ecclesiastical administrative unit. In common with other parishes it was a major instrument of local government and rate collection with responsibility for poor relief, highways and law and order, which continued until reforms in the late nineteenth century. Parish government operated through a select group of parishioners known as the vestry. In Bangor the vestry met regularly at the cathedral. The parish kept a register of Bangor house occupiers recording details including names, addresses etc. It is likely that Mr. H. Hughes compiled the 1884 register, as he was registrar and rate collector in Bangor at that time.
