Administrative / Biographical History

Nurse M. Goodbun (fl. 1930-1960) was born in Stepney. She later moved to Manning Road on the Becontree Estate, Dagenham. During the Second World War, she served as a nurse at a clinic run by the ARP on Ford Road. After the war she left the area to train as a midwife. When she had finished her training she was employed by the Borough of Dagenham, until the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. Nurse Goodbun was the first midwife in the borough to have a car purchased to enable her to carry out her work in Dagenham Village, Rainham Road and the Rylands Estate. At this time she was living on Western Avenue.
