Personal Papers of Helen Wodehouse

Box I - talks, speeches and sermons, 1911-1961, including 'Reason and Justice - some reflections' at Girton College Political Society, 1936 and 'University women in war-time' for Radio Ankara, Turkey, March 1914. Box II - papers and articles for publication, chiefly relating to education and teaching, 1908-1948, including 'The spiritual nature in education' for Pitman's Educational Encyclopedia, May 1916 and 'England's Education - then and now' for the Daily News, May 1931. Box III - Printed material, 1909-1958, including 'The study of philosophy - the question of books' article in 'The Highway', 1910 and 'Church, Community and State with reference to education (an address given to Durham College)' in the Durham University Journal, September 1938 . Box IV - Photographs, sermons and poems, 1901-1959, including 'The glass curtain' by A H Paul in the 'Listener', 29 May 1952, and H M Wodehouse's sermon 'Power Tools' (address given in Girton College Chapel), March 1942 which was published in the 'Girton Review' at Easter Term 1942.

Helen Marion Wodehouse was born in Devon in 1880, daughter of the Reverend Philip John Wodehouse and Marion Bryan Wallas. She was educated at Notting Hill School, London and came to Girton as a Clothworkers' Exhibitioner to study maths 1898-1901. She then stayed on for a fourth year to read Moral Sciences, completing the two-year course in a single year. She was a Gilchrist Fellow at Girton 1902-1903. She took her Teacher's Higher Diploma, Birmingham, 1903 and lectured in Philosophy at the university there from 1903 to 1911. In her career she held posts including Professor of Education at the University of Bristol 1919-1931, Mistress of Girton 1931-1942 and External Examiner in Education at the University of Manchester. She published extensively on philosophical and religious subjects and contributed to a number of publications relating to education. Helen Wodehouse died in 1964.
