Administrative / Biographical History

William Reid (1827-1884) was a shoemaker and also taught at the Waterside Sabbath School. He married his second wife Margaret Inglis (1841-1910) in 1867. Their fourth child, James Inglis Reid (1874-1952) was born in Waterside, Kirkintilloch. The family also lived in Stepps in North Lanarkshire for a time. William was a committed Protestant and an elder of the South United Free Church, Kirkintilloch. In 1906 when he was 32 years old James emigrated to Canada going on to establish his own successful retail meat business, James Inglis Reid Limited, in Vancouver. He married Margaret Crombie (1877-1968) in 1908 and the couple had three children. Margaret's mother and sister came over from Scotland to live with the couple in Canada. James's brother Alexander and his sisters Jemima and Jean also emigrated and settled in Vancouver. James was proud of his Scottish heritage and was a founding member of the Scottish Society of Vancouver. The business of James Inglis Reid Limited was carried on by James's son-in-law Gordon Young Wyness from 1945 until it closed in 1986.
