Personal Papers of Sarah Tebbutt

Scope and Content

Copy of the diary of Sarah Ellen Tebbutt (nee Mason) for her years at Girton, 1878-1880. The almost daily entries cover activities at College and in Cambridge including work, lectures, social life and the clubs and societies of which she was a member. She describes debates at College and at the Union, singing at College and with CUMS. Also letter from Mrs B S Lester to H I McMorran, 29 April 1970 and letter from M C Bradbrook to Mrs B S Lester, 19 October 1970 about the copy of the diary

Administrative / Biographical History

Sarah Mason came up to Girton in 1878, staying until the Easter Term 1880 then returning in Easter 1882. She was a College Scholar. Although she studied Classics and Natural Sciences, she did not take a Tripos. She achieved Class I in the Special Examination for Law in 1881 and obtained the standard of Ordinary Degree, 1882. She married Frank Tebbutt in 1894 and died in 1928.

Acquisition Information

Given by Mrs Tebbutt's daughter, B S M Lester in 1970. Correspondence between Mrs Lester and Professor Bradbrook (Mistress of Girton) is filed with the diary.
