Papers of the Sami Support Committee

Scope and Content

Correspondence with activists and organisations, notes, printed ephemera, circulars, press cuttings, issues of journals and magazines.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Sami Support Committee was formed early in 1981 to support the Sami people and other activists protesting against the Alta-Kautokeino hydro-electric project in northern Norway, which would flood Sami reindeer grazing lands. The group was formed following a picket of the Norwegian tourist office on 14 January 1981 in response to the Norwegian government decision to break up the protest using force. Survival International, CIMRA and London Greenpeace were the organisers of the picket. The Committee was based at London Greenpeace 6 Endsleigh Street. This collection was created by one of the activists involved with the Committee, Martyn Lowe.

The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material.

Appraisal Information

Duplicate circulars and blank pages have been removed. One publication, 'Charta 79: the Sami people and human rights' has been transferred to the Peace Pamphlets Collection. It is likely that further cataloguing will reveal more scope for appraisal.
