Commission in favour of James Stewart of Ardetye, 1646.

Scope and Content

Commission, signed by Archibald Campbell, marquis of Argyll, appointing James Stewart of Ardetye as a captain to command a company in the Regiment of Highlanders that the annual Parliament had asked to be levied. Issued at St Andrews, January 1646.

Administrative / Biographical History

Archibald Campbell (1605/7-1661), marquis of Argyll, was involved in the national covenant, became a leader of the covenanting armies, negotiated the peace of Berwick with Charles I, crowned Charles II at Scone but eventually submitted to Cromwell, refused to join in with a royalist rebellion involving his son in 1653, and supplied information to the English side; his great unpopularity ensured that after the Restoration, no-one would save him from execution in 1661.
