Scope and Content

Letters and documents: Sir Thomas Cochrane's 'standing instructions for H.M. ships stationed at the Ports of India and China', 1845; printed proclamation by Sir Henry Pottinger, 1843, on the Supplementary Treaty between Britain and China, 1843; letters from John Norman Campbell (Captain), Samuel H. Inglefield (Commander in Chief, Madras), Sir James H. Plumridge (Commander of First Class), T.H. Layton (British consul, Amoy), and Frederick E. Johnstone (Commander), giving instructions to Hay on crew, sailing orders, improving the gunnery range of the H.M.S. Columbine, and the suppression of piracy; and a translation of a letter from Seu, Lieutenant Governor of Fukien.
