The Brettle Collection of Printed Maps of Nottinghamshire, 1595-1860

Scope and Content

The Collection consists of thirty-two maps dating from 1585 to 1860. Twenty-nine are county maps of Nottinghamshire, two are 'road maps', which traverse parts of Nottinghamshire and one, the earliest, by Gerard Mercator is a regional map which includes Nottinghamshire.

This is an artificial collection of thirty-two Nottinghamshire maps detached from various seventeenth- to nineteenth-century atlases.

Arrangement

The maps are arranged in chronological order followed by the map-maker's name.

Conditions Governing Use

COPYRIGHT: Identification of copyright holders of unpublished material is often difficult. The Department will try to assist in identifying copyright owners but the responsibility for copyright clearance before publication ultimately rests with the reader.

Custodial History

The maps came to the University Library from a local headteacher, after whom the Collection is named, in 1961. Another map was added by a relative in 1983.
