Administrative / Biographical History

The map in this collection was published by the Admiralty Hydrographic Office. The Admiralty appointed its first hydrographer in 1795 and published its first admiralty chart in 1800. During the first half of the 19th century, the Admiralty began selling charts to the public, devised the Beaufort Scale for wind strength and introduced official tide tables. Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort was Admiralty Hydrographer from 1829 to 1855 and oversaw many of these developments.
