Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
George Proctor (1856-1920) was born in Newcastle, but moved to Gainsborough in Lincolnshire shortly after his marriage. He worked at Marshall, Sons and Company Limited as a brass finisher, and in 1905 was one of six men chosen to be on a Commission of Enquiry of English Workmen, sent to investigate social conditions amongst industrial workers in Germany. The six men on the commission were chosen by their fellow workers from among employees at the Gainsborough firms of Marshall, Sons and Company Limited, Rose Brothers and Edlington and Company. The commission was financed by the Unionist candidate for Gainsborough in the 1906 General Election, C.A. Moreing.
