Arthur Markham Archive

Scope and Content

Small collection of papers, events items, catalogues, price lists and other publicity material and papers.

Administrative / Biographical History

Arthur Markham claimed to have won the very first bicycle race ever held in England on Whit Monday, 1868. This claim has been challenged, but there is no question that Markham was a pioneer of cycling and the cycle trade. He had a business at 345 Edgware Road, London (see Bartleet's Bicycle Book, p34).
