Newsletters and other papers, 1665-80, 1688-9, collected by Sir Daniel Fleming, including:  

  • Jan. 1667-June 1675, weekly half-sheets sent from HM Paper Office on Sir Joseph Williamson's instructions
  • June 1675-April 1680, newsletters from the same, sent more frequently
  • Sept. 1688-Aug. 1691, copies sent by various agents to Sir Daniel Fleming, his brother Roger, Sir Christopher Musgrave and others, collected and occasionally endorsed by Sir Daniel

Sir Daniel Fleming (1633-1701), of Rydal Hall, Westmorland, was an antiquary and MP. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Acquisition Information

The papers were bought at Sotheby's in 1933 and given to the Library by the Friends of the Bodleian.

Custodial History

The papers were among the manuscripts of the Le Flemings of Rydal Hall, and bear the numbers of the chronological arrangement of the whole series made by H. Maxwell Lyte in 1882, except for 23 letters at the end of MS. Don c. 40.
