Administrative / Biographical History

The National Society of Electrotypers and Stereotypers was established in 1893 as the Federated Society of Electrotypers and Stereotypers of Great Britain and Ireland. Its London branch dates back to 1864. In 1914 the Stereotypers and Electrotypers' Assistants' Society rejected merger with the Federated Society in favour of dissolution followed by membership of the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants. The Federated Society subsequently changed its name to include assistants in the title. In 1917 there was a further name change to the National Society of Electrotypers, Stereotypers and Assistants. In 1919 the Stereotypers and Electrotypers' Assistants' Society, now the Electrotypers and Stereotypers's section of Natsopa, finally joined the National Society after a transfer agreement of the members was settled by all parties. The union became the National Society of Electrotypers and Sterotypers. In 1967 it joined the National Graphical Association.
