Records of Ramsey Town Commissioners: Original Specification and Tender for Swing Bridge

Scope and Content

1 handwritten volume comprising the original specification and tender documents for the development of Ramsey Swing Bridge.

Administrative / Biographical History

Elective local government in the Isle of Man can be traced back to the Town Act 1852, under which Boards of Commissioners, each under the chairmanship of a High Bailiff, were constituted for the four towns ― . "for paving, cleansing, lighting, and watching the streets…. And for making and keeping in repair public sewers therein, and otherwise improving the towns" . The Ramsey Town Act 1865 repealed the earlier Act in respect to Ramsey and provisioned for the setting-up of the Ramsey Town Commissioners in their current form.

The Ramsey swing bridge formed part of wider late 19th century developments of the Ramsey townscape including the laying out of the Mooragh Estate, park and lake. The works for the proposed bridge went out to tender in 1888. The building works were undertaken by the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company, Darlington, England. The bridge was virtually complete by March 1892 and fully operational by May of that same year. The bridge was formally opened in June 1892. The bridge has been maintained as a vital public amenity for the people of Ramsey ever since.
