Administrative / Biographical History

Andrew Paxton , born in Dumbarton in 1920  , was one of a family whose connection with shipbuilding extended over several generations. On leaving school in 1935, he began an apprenticeship in the shipyard drawing office with William Denny and Brothers Limited, Dumbarton, and studied at the Royal Technical College and Stow College, both in Glasgow, prior to qualifying as an Associate Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Promotion to assistant manager followed and he served in that capacity for eleven years, before moving to the Greenock Dockyard Company Limited in May 1955 as general manager. In 1961 he was appointed joint Managing Director before becoming Managing Director on his own two years later. The shipyard then merged with Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited in 1966 and before long Mr Paxton was given the position of Shipbuilding Director of the combined yards, a post he held until retiring from Scott Lithgow Limited in 1980. Andrew Paxton died in 1995  .
